Background
Safety Data Sheet

MERCURY (II) CHLORIDE pure 100g.

Benchmark Supplies

Mercury(II) chloride is a highly toxic white crystalline solid for industrial and laboratory use. Exposure presents serious acute and chronic health risks including fatal toxicity if swallowed, severe skin and eye damage, and potential organ damage from prolonged exposure. Must be handled in well-ventilated areas with appropriate personal protective equipment due to its extreme environmental persistence and aquatic toxicity.

Safety Information

Key safety data extracted from the official Safety Data Sheet

Key Hazards

Danger
  • Fatal if swallowed with oral toxicity as low as 37 mg/kg
  • Causes severe skin burns and eye damage on contact
  • Suspected of causing genetic defects and reproductive harm
  • Causes organ damage through prolonged or repeated exposure
  • Extremely toxic to aquatic life with persistent environmental effects

First Aid Quick Guide

Eye Contact

Rinse thoroughly with water for at least 10 minutes while holding the eyelid open. Seek medical attention immediately unless contact was minimal.

Skin Contact

Wash skin thoroughly with water immediately. Obtain medical attention urgently as absorption through skin is highly toxic.

Inhalation

Move affected person to fresh air immediately. Keep warm and at rest. Seek medical attention as inhalation is very toxic.

Ingestion

Rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Do not induce vomiting. Seek immediate urgent medical attention as ingestion is fatal even in small quantities.

Protection Needed

Respiratory

Use local exhaust ventilation (LEV) or natural ventilation to keep vapor concentrations below exposure limits. If ventilation is inadequate, use a well-maintained chemical cartridge respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus.

Hands

Wear protective gloves to prevent skin contact with the substance.

Eyes

Use chemical splash-proof safety glasses or goggles to protect against solid particles and potential splashing.

Skin/Body

Wear protective clothing to avoid contact. Avoid skin exposure as direct contact is very toxic and causes burns.

Safe Handling

Handling Precautions
  • Avoid all contact with skin and eyes
  • Do not breathe dust or vapor
  • Ensure local exhaust ventilation maintains dust concentrations to a minimum
  • Do not allow contamination of clothing
  • Avoid contact with incompatible materials including ammonia, acetylenic compounds, azides, and ethylene oxide
Storage

Store in well-ventilated, cool, and dry conditions. Keep container tightly closed. Store away from incompatible substances and ensure proper ventilation to manage any dust or vapors.
