A Risk Assessment is the methodical process of looking at work activities, considering what could go wrong, and then deciding on appropriate control measures to prevent loss, damage or injury in the workplace.  The Risk Assessment should include the controls required to eliminate, reduce or minimise the risks.

A Risk Assessment is crucial for the protection of your employees and your business.  They help ensure you are compliant with the law. Business owners have a legal responsibility to assess the risks of injury or ill health to employees and others.   A Risk Assessment should include a careful examination of all the factors which can bring about these risks.  It will also help employers decide if they have implemented enough precautions to protect workers or if more should be done to prevent harm.

A Risk Assessment should follow set guidelines advocated by the HSE which include:

  • Identifying what the hazards are;
  • Determining who might be harmed and how;
  • Assessing the risks and judging whether current measures are sufficient or need revising;
  • Ensuring that any findings are recorded and employees are informed about them;
  • Evaluating the assessment and modifying as necessary.
A Risk Assessment should cover all standard operations, including cleaning and maintenance tasks. It should reflect how the work is actually done.
